New Delhi: If you haven’t yet linked your PAN (Permanent Account Number) card with Aadhaar card yet, then you have time till September 30. The Income Tax department has made PAN-Aadhaar linking mandatory without which PAN might be declared inoperative by the tax department.
The last date of linking of Aadhaar number with PAN was extended to September 30, 2019. As per the finance ministry notification, every person who has been allotted a PAN and who is eligible to get an Aadhaar number has to link the two together. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court also upheld the section 139AA of the Income Tax Act which makes PAN-Aadhaar linking mandatory. In fact, it is already mandatory to quote the Aadhaar number while filing income tax returns (ITR).
It is worth mentioning that with PAN and Aadhaar becoming interchangeable, people who do not have PAN can now file ITR by quoting their Aadhaar number and also use it wherever they are required to quote PAN. The income tax department has also said it will auto-issue PAN cards in all such cases.
